Planning

The key to successful drone forestry survey is thorough preparation and planning. The more thoughtfully we prepare for the flight, the more accurate and valuable data we can collect, and the smoother the entire process will be.

Most important steps of planning

  • Area determination: precisely record the boundaries of the forest compartment to be surveyed so the flight route provides complete coverage.
  • Weather check: flight should only be performed in stable, windless, and clear weather. Strong wind, precipitation, or fog degrades sensor performance and can distort measurements.
  • Energy source provision: always plan with sufficient batteries and backup batteries, as longer routes and larger image overlap require more energy consumption.
  • Site condition assessment: it's worth getting to know the terrain in advance and paying attention to potential challenges (e.g., tall trees, power lines, topographic challenges).
  • Flight route preparation: the KML file exported from TreeDetect must be loaded into the drone control software (e.g., DJI Pilot 2, DroneDeploy) and finalize the parameters provided by the platform there.
  • Adequate storage: surveying larger areas may require a lot of storage, so always ensure adequate storage provision.

Advantage: TreeDetect helps with planning preparation, the area to be surveyed can be planned in the software, and it provides all necessary flight parameters.
